Side-By-Side: 9 of Wands

For Day 1 of Side by Side, I drew the 9 of Wands. The key themes that drove this card’s design were RESILIENCE and NEARING COMPLETION. On the left: Chinese laborers, led by Hung Wah, work together to complete the transcontinental railroad. They are weary, but undaunted. On the right: A wounded man clutches a tall staff; a wall of wands provides a protective barrier behind him. He appears weary but defiant.
